When I started getting out into the community and networking, people always asked me, “what is your specialty?” This is when I learned that it’s a bad idea to say that I shoot everything. First of all, it’s hard to do everything and be great at all of it or not get burned out. Also, people took me quite literally, and work that I really didn’t want (nor was prepared for) started to pour in. At that point, I began to give more thought to a specialty, but I couldn’t get my head around it. So, I did what I always do when I’m having a problem… I called my mom. She asked what jobs I’d done in the past that I most enjoyed. I’m always gleeful when I get called by this specific client of mine to shoot large quantities of convenience stores in the Southeastern United States that are going up for sale. I have a gypsy soul, and the opportunity to travel is intoxicating (plus the money is good). But I wasn’t sure how to build a business based on that experience, so I continued to ponder over the issue. It wasn’t until I gained a new client who wanted me to photograph her handmade art jewelry that I discovered that I really do love product & commercial photography. I find it relaxing and magical (which, incidentally, is why I fell in love with photography in the first place, back in 1995). And the best part? With commercial photography, I can poke on it, move it, yell at it, sit in silence with it, or pretty much do what I want, and it doesn’t talk back, get its feelings hurt, cry, or complain of muscle cramps due to how I have it positioned.
